Leadership Roles

  • Make sure steering committee roles are followed
  • Make sure members get all information
  • Accountable to steering committee
  • Assist in note-taking and facilitating at open houses

We will do this by:

  • Identifying opportunities, community partners, and funding
  • Documenting advocacy
  • Identifying and applying for necessary funding
  • Long-term resources are sustainable over a significant period of time

The steering committee’s role is to:

  • Review all the plans and data previously done and synthesize
  • Identifying opportunities, community partners, and funding
  • Practical — review plans and identify short-, mid-, or long-term goals
  • Suggest and affirm projects and policies

We will do this by:

  • Active engagement with the community planning process
  • Building relationships with each other
  • Listening for feedback on the community engagement process
  • Model for working through discussion and controversial issues
  • Identifying controversial issues: defensible decisions, conclusions, transparency in communication

The steering committee’s responsibilities include:

  • Communicate the process to the broader community
  • Identifying intersections of support
  • Reviewing technical document
  • Giving final approval/recommendation of plan
  • Assisting in facilitation and taking notes at open houses

We will do this by:

  • Engagement by truly connecting with all residents
  • Communication
  • Identifying cultural difference/barriers (Vietnamese, Korean, Asian, Somali, Latino, Pacific Islander, Lao)
  • Intentional outreach
  • Respecting the other person as if you would have to walk in their shoes

The steering committee’s decision-making process

  • Yes/no verbal — verbal for minor decision
  • We will vote by paper with discussion before the paper vote
  • We will be a model for working through discussion and controversial issues
  • Creating a safe environment for members to agree and disagree
  • Remaining open-minded
  • Building trust by thinking about each other’s needs
